What About Charging

Electric vehicles (EVs) can be charged in two different ways: either with a standard 120-volt outlet or a higher-powered 240-volt outlet. Depending on the type of EV, its battery capacity, and the power of the charging station, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours to fully charge an EV.
Charging with a standard 120-volt wall outlet is called Level 1 charging, and it requires up to 12 hours for a full charge. This type of charging is used at home for overnight charging, as the slower speed does not require any special installation or additional hardware.
Level 2 charging is much faster — up to 10 times faster than Level 1 — because it uses a higher-powered 240-volt outlet. This type of charging often requires the installation of specific equipment such as a dedicated circuit breaker panel or electrical wiring to provide enough juice for fast charging.
Lastly, there are DC fast chargers that use even higher power levels to give EVs an 80% charge in just 15–30 minutes. These types of chargers are extremely powerful (up to 500 volts), but they are also very expensive and complex to install, so they’re usually found in public locations like shopping centers or gas stations, rather than at private residences.
